Pilipinx Issues: Kababayan Ko

Searching for a place where you can explore and embrace Pilipino culture and Heritage in the Bay Area and Los Angeles? Join us for a quarter of reflecting on the history of the Philippines and exploring the effects of the Pilipino Diaspora on our lives. Learn how colonial history has shaped the Philippines development and modern attitudes. This is an opportunity for everyone to delve deeper into the past to understand the country’s growth and policies. For our trip, we’ll be touring the Bay Area and LA and exploring to discover local organizations that celebrate Pilipino culture and have revolutionized Pilipino advocacy.  

  • Explore, discover, and connect with Pilipino history and culture through lectures and discussions. Students will learn about events and issues that have shaped Filipino and Filipino American identities. 

  • Open to Everyone interested in Asian American History and Community Organizing!

  • Work directly with local Filipino orgs and impact the community in tangible ways 

  • Visit Filipino-American Heritage Sites around the Bay and LA! 

  • Learn about Post-Colonial and Modern Struggles in the Philippines, and the global Filipino Diaspora

Amanda Altarejos

Amanda is a sophomore majoring in Comparative Literature. She enjoyed taking this class last year to truly understand the complexities of the Philippines. Amanda is looking forward to sharing her newfound knowledge with students and learning from their stories, too.

Noelle Villanueva

Noelle is a Junior majoring in STS. She was in the ASB class last year and reconnected with her roots through this class. Noelle wants to create a space for others to learn about the Philippines’ history and culture and is super excited to be leading the trip this year.
